A single spring kit is one spring that supports the valve on its own whereas a dual kit has the outer spring as well as a smaller spring inside. The reason we recommend dual spring kits is because in the highly unlikely event of one of the dual valve springs failing, the other spring (typically the inner spring) will still be in tact to hold the valve up and prevent it from dropping into the engine, potentially saving a costly engine rebuild.
